John Daniel Thieme is "a wandering poet always in pursuit of the perfect word and dedicated to an almost Augustinian quest for beauty and truth".

Thieme is the author of two collections of poetry—the ghost dancers (2014) and the forthcoming paulinskill hours and other poems (2015). He contributed an introduction and notes to a recent edition of John Donne's Holy Sonnets (2014). His research spans poetry, literary criticism, linguistics, history, theology, and folklore, with a keen interest in the intersection of faith, folklore, and art in narratives of pilgrimage and martyrdom; and in depictions of evil and death.
